The main flavor of this southwest sauce comes from chipotle pepper in adobo sauce.
What is Chipotle pepper in adobo sauce?
As I said, Chipotle peppers in adobo are the key to this homemade sauce.
Chipotle chilies are ripe red jalapeno peppers that have been dried and smoked. They have a medium heat and a beautiful fruity smoky flavor.
And the adobo sauce is a savory concoction made with onion, tomato, vinegar, and spices.
When combined they make a flavorful sauce. It’s a smooth sauce that’s a little sweet and tangy. This sauce is easily available in any grocery store.
But if you leave in small cities or if it’s not available, here are some of the substitutions you can try.
- Tabasco Chipotle hot sauce
- Tomato paste, Smoked paprika, and Cayenne pepper
- Or you can make your own with tomato ketchup, vinegar, chipotle powder, cumin, oregano, garlic powder, and salt.
On top of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, we also used mayonnaise, sour cream, sweetener, vinegar, and some spices.

Ingredients required
- Mayonnaise – This is the base of this recipe that adds creaminess. I have used full-fat vegan mayo as we don’t eat eggs. If you are not vegan or allergic to eggs, feel free to use regular mayo.
- Sour cream – Adds a little extra tang and creamy texture.
- Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce – This is the main ingredient for southwest flavors! You will find these in a can usually in the international aisle of most grocery stores.
- Sweetener – To give a little bit of sweetness to the southwest sauce, I have used maple syrup. You can substitute it with honey or sugar.
- Garlic powder and onion powder– add tons of flavors!
- Vinegar – balances the flavors and helps to brighten up the flavors by adding a hint of tang to the sauce.
- Dijon Mustard – adds sharp flavors.
- Other Seasonings – paprika, Italian seasoning, and salt are used to properly season the sauce.
