My husband loves Chai. Like many Indians, he starts his morning with a cup of Indian Masala Tea/Chai.
Don’t hate me if I say I am not a great fan of Chai.
But I love the smell of tea made with the homemade grounded spice blend.
The secret to a great cup of Chai is the masala, the spice mixture.
I make chai ka masala in large quantities as my husband is a big-time tea drinker. And as I said, He likes to have a cup of masala chai in the morning and the evening.
I don’t make a new batch of tea masala every time I make Chai for my husband. Instead, I make sure to always have some on hand.
You can buy tea masala from the store, but I prefer freshly ground from whole spices.
Like Homemade Sambhar masala and Chaat masala, I always keep this Chai Masala Powder in my pantry.
It is easy to make masala tea when you already have tea spice mix.
Every Indian household has its perfect blend of spices for making chai masala.
Today I am sharing my Dadis (Grandmother’s) homemade chai masala powder recipe that your family will love. Please follow the exact measurements to get the best result.
But before that, let’s learn about Chai masala, its benefits, and its ingredients.
What is Chai Masala?
Chai Masala Powder is an aromatic blend of whole spices that you add to your Indian tea (Chai) to make it more flavorful.
Masala Chai is very popular in India, and it is made by adding tea masala in boiling water, tea, Milk, and sugar.
Adding chai ka masala enhances the taste of tea and has several medicinal benefits.

Ingredients for Chai Masala Recipe
Below are the ingredients for making an aromatic Chai Masala recipe and their health benefits. These spices are readily available in Indian grocery stores or on Amazon.

- Black Peppercorns (Kali Mirch): It has anti-inflammatory properties and helps with digestion and nutrient absorption. They add a little spice kick to the Chai. If you don’t prefer spice kick, you can reduce the quantity of black pepper by half.
- Cloves (Laung) – Add earthy and strong spice flavor to your Chai. Cloves contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
- Green Cardamom (Elaichi): It has antioxidants and cancer-fighting compounds. It adds fragrance to Chai. Feel free to increase the quantity of cardamom.
- Fennel Seeds: It is a flavorful and aromatic spice that gives spiced Indian tea a pleasant taste.
- Cinnamon (Dalchini): This helps in lowering the risk of diabetes, regulating blood sugar, and many more. It adds natural sweetness.
- Dried Ginger Powder (Sonth): It helps reduce inflammation and improves digestion and immunity against flu & cold. It adds a mild spice kick.
- Nutmeg (Jaiphal) – relieves pain, improves indigestion, and helps sleep and blood circulation.
- Dried herbs: I like using dried mint leaves, and Tulsi leaves in my tea masala mix. These ingredients are optional, but I recommend using them if you have them.
- Dried rose petals – are highly antioxidants and have a natural soothing aroma. It is readily available online and in Indian stores.
Step-by-step process
- Take all the ingredients in a grinder.
- Blend to make a coarse powder.
- Store in an airtight container for up to a month.
- Use ¼ teaspoon of this powder for each cup of Indian masala chai.
How to use this Chai Ka Masala to make Masala Chai?
- Boil 1 cup of water in a pot. Once the water is boiled, add ¼ teaspoon chai masala, 1 ½ teaspoon chai patti, and 1 teaspoon sugar. Let the tea simmer for 1 minute.
- Then add 1 cup of Milk. Let it comes to a boil, and turn off the stove.
- Strain the Chai. Serve with some cookies or Indian snacks.
Tips and notes
- I like to grind the masala as coarse powder. However, feel free to grind in the fine powder too.
- This Masala stays good at room temperature for up to 1-2 months in an airtight container. I highly recommend making this tea masala powder in small quantities to retain freshness.
- Always use a dry spoon when using the chia masala for making masala chai.
- You can also keep this masala in the freezer for more extended storage.
- Make sure to let the spice mix sit on the plate for 10 to 15 minutes after grinding and before storing it.
- This Indian spice mix can be added with plain water, boiled for a few minutes, and enjoyed as an immunity booster drink to heal a sore throat, cold, or cough.
- Follow the exact measurements and ingredients the recipe uses to make the perfect chai masala.
- Add ¼ teaspoon of Chai ka masala powder to every cup of tea.
- Dried mint leaves, dried tulsi leaves, and dried rose petals are optional ingredients. But If you have it on hand or available in the store, I highly recommend you use those in making this masala.

- ½ cup Green Cardamom (Elaichi) (50 grams)
- ¼ cup Cloves (Laung) ( 25 grams)
- 1 tablespoon Fennel Seeds (Saunf) (7.5 grams)
- ¼ cup Black peppercorn (Kali Mirch) (35 grams)
- 6 inch Cinnamon stick (Dalchini) (8 grams)
- 1 teaspoon Grated Nutmeg (Jaiphal)
- ¼ cup Ginger powder (Sonth) (25 grams)
- ¼ cup Dried Mint optional
- ¼ cup Dried Tulsi (dried holy basil)) Optional
- ¼ cup Dried rose petal leaves optional
Instructions
- Take all the ingredients in a grinder.
- Blend to make a coarse powder.
