What is Bloody Mary?
It is a classic cocktail born in the 1920s. The combination of vodka and tomato juice became very popular and it’s the most popular brunch cocktail to this day.
The classic bloody mary drink is made with tomato juice, vodka, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, lime juice, celery salt, and some fun garnishes.
Since I don’t drink alcohol, I decided to make the virgin version of classic bloody mary and share it with you guys.
The great thing about this drink is that it’s so full of flavor, it’s so hard to believe that there’s no alcohol! The pickle juice and Worcestershire sauce easily help to distract the palate.
The pickle juice gives a little complexity to the flavor. It gives the similar flavor you’ll get from alcohol.
Why I love this mocktail?
It’s so full of flavor: savory, tangy, spicy, and salty all at once! You’ll hardly believe it’s a mocktail.
- It’s the perfect mocktail to make it advance.
- You can easily multiply the quantities and serve them in a jug for guests.
- It can be enjoyed with any meal or on its own.
- Perfect for those who don’t drink alcoholic drinks.
- Perfect for any party, BBQs, pool party, or gatherings.
Make-Ahead
One thing I love about Bloody Mary Mix is that the flavor seems to improve with time. This virgin Bloody Mary tastes delicious right away. But it tastes even better after 1 to 2 hours of chill time, or even better, overnight! As the spices have time to mix and mingle, the flavor becomes more robust.
You can make it in advance up to 1 week. That’s the bonus!
Ingredients required to make this recipe
The ingredients in a virgin Bloody Mary are the same as a regular Bloody Mary minus the vodka.
- Tomato juice – I always choose to buy tomato juice at the store instead of making it at home. Make sure you Choose the Right Tomato Juice. When choosing tomato juice, make sure to read the labels. Certain types of tomato juice may contain added sugars. Look for a tomato juice that is with no added sugar. Many cheap tomato juices have unnatural ingredients too. They use preservatives to increase the shelf life. Always use organic tomato juice. My favorite is R.W. Knudsen Organic Tomato Juice.
- Pickle juice – I always have a pickle bottle in my fridge. So I have used its juice in this drink. If you don’t have them on hand, you can omit them! The flavor is just as good without. It’s just a touch more fun with it! Or you can use olive brine too.
- Hot sauce – I used Tabasco sauce. You can use any. Adjust it according to your taste.
- Lemon and lime juice –
- Worcestershire sauce – I have used the Vegan version of Worcestershire sauce. Its easily available on Amazon, whole foods, and sprouts. If you are ok with seafood, you may use regular Worcestershire sauce too.
- Some spices – Celery Salt and Cayenne Pepper. You can adjust these spices according to your liking. You can omit cayenne pepper if you don’t prefer spicy bloody mary.
- Garnishes – You can garnish it however you like it. I like to garnish it with Celery, Pimento stuffed olives, Lemon wedges, and cheese. 😊
How to make a virgin Bloody Mary?
This virgin Bloody Mary is made with the same method as classic Bloody Mary, you just don’t add alcohol!
If you are going to serve the drink right away, Chill the tomato juice first. This step ensures that the drink gets cold without having to use too much ice to dilute it. And if you are going to serve the drink after few hours, skip this step.
Step 1 Make Best Bloody Mary Mix
Making bloody mary mix at home is very easy and takes hardly 5 minutes. Sure it is easily available in the stores but those are filled with preservatives and whatnot.
So here is my way of making virgin bloody mary mix –
Set out a large pitcher. Pour in the tomato juice, lemon juice, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, Celery Salt, and Cayenne Pepper and hot sauce. Stir well.
Step 2 Chill
Chilling it for a couple of hours is important.
Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour or until ready to serve.
Step – 3 Rimming the glass
You don’t have to rim the glass, but I find it adds a nice finish. I used a mix of celery salt and cayenne pepper for the rim.
Place celery salt and cayenne pepper in a shallow saucer and give it a little mix.
Pro-tip – You’ll have some excess that can be saved for next time.
Take a small piece of lime, moisten the outside of the glass. Make sure to rim the outside of the glass only.
Once the rim is moistened, gently place the glass upside down on the saucer. Dip the glass into the spice mix, rotating the glass through the spice mix so that only the outer edge of the rim is spiced. (refer to video given below in recipe card for better understanding).
Step – 4 Serve
Then fill glasses with ice and pour in the Bloody Mary Mix. This recipe makes 2 large glasses.
Step – 5 Garnish
This is the most fun part. Get creative and garnish it however you like.
Here is my way of garnishing –
Place celery stick inside the glass. Then take cocktail skewers. Insert olives, lime wedge, cheese, or anything you like!
Notes and Quick FAQs –
- Always mix all the ingredients in a beverage pitcher or a cocktail shaker without ice. Ice dilutes the mix too much and makes for a watery consistency. Simply mix the mixture without ice, then serve it over ice.
- Chilling the bloody mary mix – chilling the mixture for about 1 hour or overnight lets the flavors meld. But if you want it on demand, serve immediately.
The origins of these two drinks are different. The virgin mary, a nonalcoholic version of the bloody mary, is American, whereas the virgin caesar, the nonalcoholic version of a bloody caesar, is Canadian. Additionally, the bloody mary is a tomato juice-based drink while the caesar uses Clamato juice instead.
The celery is used for the garnished purpose as well as munching in between the sips. The celery helps cleans the taste in your mouth ..helping every sip of your beverage taste delicious.
This mocktail is highly nutritious! Tomato juice contains a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and is full of health benefits.
The best way to serve the drink is to serve in tall glasses. And also garnish it using cocktail picks or skewers. It looks stunning and it makes the beverage easy to drink.
This is the recipe how I and my family like. But you can experiment with additional ingredients like wasabi, fresh ginger, cayenne pepper, smoked salt, paprika, garlic powder, nutmeg, all-purpose seasoning, etc.
Sure you can.
If you have the time to make juice at home, choose any variety of tomatoes of your choice. Remove the stems and use your electric blender. Strain out seeds and use them in the recipe.
Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to a week.
If you are planning on mixing up a big batch of the drink, store it in the refrigerator for up to a week in an air-tight container or jar.
