During festive occasions like Diwali, Thanksgiving, or Christmas, I like to get creative and make unique and fun mocktails to add an extra special touch to my dinner parties. Having a delicious, non-alcoholic drink on the menu allows everyone to enjoy it, whether they drink alcohol or not. A few of my favorite drink recipes from the blog are the Hibiscus margarita, Pineapple Jaljeera, Aam panna, and pineapple jalapeno margarita. I want to add another recipe of my favorite mocktails—the Tamarind Mango Mocktail!
The inspiration for creating this Mocktail came from the famous Mexican drink known as Mangonada. Mangonada is a vibrant and delightful drink with ripe mangoes, chamoy, tamarind candies, and tajin seasoning. It strikes the perfect balance of sweetness, sourness, spiciness, saltiness, and umami, and the Tamarind Mango Mocktail mirrors these pleasant flavor elements.
The sweetness in this Mocktail comes from the mango juice, balanced by the tamarind tartness and a little spice kick from the tajin. Additionally, a touch of roasted cumin powder and kala namak gives it that earthy flavor and an Indian touch.
This virgin drink is easy to make, fresh, fizzy, tasty, and can be prepared in less than 10 minutes! It’s a non-alcoholic drink that feels super special and festive, making it suitable for all ages. It’s a perfect, tasty, and fun drink for when you want to skip the alcohol but still feel like something fancy! You can serve this drink with water or with sparkling water.
Ingredients
- Mango Juice: For this recipe, you have a few options for the mango juice: mango juice or mango nectar. I used Mango nectar purchased from Costco, but you can use Fruity or Mango Maza if you’re in India. It’s important to chill the juice before using it.
- Spices: For a spicy touch, I like to use Tajin, black salt, and roasted cumin powder for earthy flavors. Adding some mint also brings a fresh taste to the drink.
- Tamarind pulp: When it comes to tamarind pulp, you can make it yourself or purchase it from the store to make the process easy. I made my own, but you can also find it at Indian stores. Make sure to get tamarind (imli) pulp, not the sweet chutney.
- Club soda or sparkling water: I used club soda in my recipe, but you can also use sparkling water. You can also serve it in water. It won’t make much difference in the Mango Mocktail, but for the best taste and experience, serve with sparkling water or club soda.
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
- Step 1: Put seedless tamarind and water in a pot. Boil on a medium flame for 5 minutes or until the tamarinds are soft. Switch off the flame and let it cool down. Once cooled, make a paste using a blender or immersion hand blender. Strain the pulp using a fine strainer. The tamarind paste/pulp is ready. Keep it aside.
- Step 2: In a big mixing bowl or beverage pitcher, combine mango nectar/juice, tajin, black salt, roasted cumin powder, and prepared tamarind pulp. Mix everything very well. Refrigerate this mixture for at least 2 hours.
- Now, take a glass, add some ice cubes, and a few mint leaves. Fill half a glass with the prepared mango tamarind mixture. Add sparkling water or club soda. Stir and serve immediately.
- Tip: You can also assemble this drink directly in a beverage pitcher. Just make sure to add soda or sparkling water right before serving.
Make ahead
You can easily make the tamarind and mango mixture 2 to 3 days in advance. That will make the process of making the drink on the day of your party so easy. Just keep the tamarind and mango mixture refrigerated, and then add the soda, ice, and mint just before you plan to serve the drink.
Serving suggestions
For best results, chill the drink mixture in the refrigerator before serving, and make sure your sparkling water, club soda, or water is also cold. When serving, fill the glasses halfway with the mango tamarind mixture and the other half with the soda or water. Only add the soda or water before serving to keep the drink bubbly.
Tajin substitutes
You can use Chili lime seasoning or make your own spice mix by combining 4 tablespoon chili powder, 2 tablespoon sea salt (or any salt), and 2 tablespoon lime powder. If you don’t have lime powder, you can use 1 teaspoon citric acid. Mix all the spices in a spice blender jar. Remember to use only 1 tablespoon of the homemade tajin seasoning in the specified drink quantity.
Top tip
- I recommend adding sparkling water or club soda just before serving the drink. Remember to stir the drink before serving.
- To make your drink look festive, you can also coat the rim of the glass with some tajin or black salt.
- This recipe will serve 8 if you serve it in 8-oz glasses. Serving this Mocktail in smaller glasses will yield more. You can easily double the recipe.
- This drink is better when cold, so add plenty of ice cubes and enjoy it immediately once served.

Hi dhwani
I made tamarind pulp but its little rawish sour. Should I add something to fix this or directly use it in the mocktail so the spices and mango nectar fixes it?
Directly use it.
