Whether it’s Diwali, Thanksgiving, or Christmas, I love making virgin drinks for gatherings and parties.

Festive Parties are incomplete without a refreshing welcome drink and this Exotic smoky Jamun Mojito is a drink that can be enjoyed by everyone alike.

It is made with Kala Jamun pulp, sugar, lots of fresh mint, and limes. Then topped with sparkling water!

It adds to the vibe of the party menu. As it is made without alcohol, it can be enjoyed by everyone, be it kids or adults.

So like every year, I am here with an easy and non-alcoholic fusion drink recipe to share with you all.

About this recipe

The main ingredient of this recipe is Jamun pulp.

Jamun, also known as black plum or java plum, is a summer Indian fruit. It has a sweet, sour, and acidic taste.

It is loaded with antioxidants, has many health benefits, and helps to come over stomach pain.

Kala Jamun cures many infections in our body and helps to maintain our body as well.

Not just fruit, its stone, and plant leaves are also very nutritious for our bodies.

We don’t get fresh Jamun here in the US.

But Jamun pulp is easily available in Indian grocery stores in the freezer section.

So now you just don’t need to worry about the availability of the fruit.

Coming to the recipe, Jamun mojito is a very easy drink to make and just requires a handful of ingredients. This drink can be made in almost no time.

Jamun gives piquant flavor, vibrant hue, and shine when paired with lime and mint.

To make it extra special and give smoky flavors, I gave a Dhungar to the drink.

What is the dhungar method? Is this method compulsory?

It’s the method of infusing the flavors of burnt charcoal into a dish/drink.

Charcoal is heated on direct fire and then placed in a bowl placed inside the recipe. Then ghee is added over the hot charcoal, and as soon as the steam/fumes come out from it, the dish is covered with a tight lid.

The dish adsorbs the smoky/charcoal flavors.

The longer you close the lid, the smokier the dish’s taste will be. When I am doing it for a drink recipe, I always prefer to do it for 1 minute only for mild smoky flavors.

It’s not compulsory but highly recommend giving Dhungar to this drink. The dhungar method takes this drink from the wow level to the god tier.

Ingredients required

  • Jamun pulp – readily available in Indian grocery stores in the freezer section. Don’t use ready-made Jamun juice. Only use fresh 100% Jamun pulp.
  • Sugar – is added to enhance the sweetness and cut down the astringent flavor of the Jamun.
  • Mint leaves – This is also the star of the drink. You’ll muddle some mint leaves to infuse the drink flavor and add more to your glass for garnish. It adds to the freshness of the drink and acts as a good coolant too.
  • Fresh lime wedge and juice – add a bright, tart flavor. Always, always use fresh lime in this Jamun mojito recipe.
  • Sparkling water – balances the tart lime and gives the mojito a fun fizz. You could also use ginger ale or a lemon-lime flavored soda instead of sparkling water, but why add more sugar when it isn’t needed?
  • Ice – You can’t make a cool, refreshing mojito without it!

Step-by-step recipe

  • First, thaw the Jamun pulp according to the package instruction.
  • Then muddle the mint, lime wedges, sugar, and lime juice. Place the mint and lime wedges in a big bowl or pitcher.
  • Use a cocktail muddler to press it until it becomes aromatic and juice is squeezed from the lime wedges.
  • Note – When you’re muddling the mint, your goal isn’t to pulverize it or crush it. Instead, just bruise it slightly to help it release its fragrant oils. This should only take a few taps with your muddler!
  • Then add Jamun pulp. Mix with a spoon until the sugar dissolves.

  • Place a trivet in a bowl (drink mixture bowl). Then place a steel bowl on top of a trivet.
  • Then heat a piece of charcoal over direct heat until it’s red hot.
  • Place hot charcoal in that steel bowl on top of the trivet. Pour ½ teaspoon ghee on top of the charcoal. You will immediately see fumes coming out of charcoal.
  • Immediately close the bowl with a lid. Let the pot close for a minute. After 1 minute remove the lid and remove the charcoal bowl from the drink.
  • Note – Don’t do it for more than a minute. Or else it will ruin the taste of the drink.
