The butter board is a TikTok viral trend that has taken the food world by storm!
Food influencer Justine Doiron (Justine Snacks) posted about the board in a TikTok video and the internet has gone crazy.
Justine credits her inspiration to Joshua McFadden who wrote about the concept in his book “Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables” which described a flower and herb butter presentation.
What is a Butter Board?
Butter board is quite a delicious and fun way to serve up bread and butter. You can change the garnishes depending on the season and festivals.
First softened butter is slathered on a wooden serving plank or any serving board, then topped with various toppings like herbs, veggies, seasonings, nuts, etc.
Then Bread and crackers are swirled in the butter, or you can use a knife to spread the butter on them.
This butter board is an easy and amazing appetizer option for parties and gatherings. It tastes so so good.
Plus it is way more affordable than a charcuterie board, and it still comes out like a show stopper.
Not all TikTok food trends have been worth the hype, but let me assure you: this one is.
You can make your board ahead of time and refrigerate it. Before serving, take the board out for about 30 to 40 minutes and let the butter come to room temperature so the butter is spreadable for your party.
Plus this recipe is so versatile and easily customizable. There are loads of ways you can serve a butter board.
Today, I am sharing a butter board recipe with a Desi twist.
Diwali is coming and like every year I wanted to share something easy, different, and fusion and I saw this Tiktok trending Butter board on Instagram.
So thought let me give a Desi spin to the trending recipe by adding Paneer, nuts, some veggies, and garlic. And it came out so so good.
Ingredients required
- Butter: You can use salted butter or unsalted. If using unsalted butter, sprinkle a little bit of salt on top. Make sure to use good quality butter.
- Vegetables: I have used colorful bell pepper and onion as vegetables. I have also added green onions green for the color.
- Paneer: I have used grated paneer. Substitute it with grated cheese.
- Garlic: Grated garlic gives very nice flavors. Make sure to use fresh garlic.
- Chili flakes: For the spicy kick.
- Chaat masala: Little bit of chaat masala gives a complex blend of tart, spicy, salty, and tangy flavors.
- Honey or maple syrup: Little bit of sweetness balances all the flavors.
- Naan bites: I love serving this board with Naan bites readily available in the stores. You can use big naans and cut them into triangle pieces before serving. Toasted French bread or other bread works fine as well.
Step-by-step process
- Take butter in a bowl. Add in grated garlic and chili flakes. Mix well.
- Note – Butter should be soft but not melted.
- Now Take a board and line it with parchment paper.
- Spread butter on a parchment-lined board. Apply in swirls to add visual appeal.
- Now add onion, bell pepper, green onion greens, grated paneer, some chaat masala, and drizzle honey.
- Serve with Naan bites, crusty bread, or crackers.
Tips, notes, and quick FAQs
- Make sure to soften the butter so it spreads easily. Leave the butter out for about an hour on the counter before assembling and adding the toppings.
- Make sure you cut the vegetable small enough that it can be scooped onto a slice of bread as guests dive in.
- Top with something sweet. I prefer a drizzle of honey. It always does wonders.
- Serve with crusty warm bread or Naan.
- I highly recommend covering your serving tray/board with parchment paper to keep it clean (butter is greasy and can cause quite a mess).
